Nairobi Historical Walking Tour

The history of Nairobi, Kenya’s vibrant capital city, is a fascinating story of transformation from a simple railway depot into one of Africa’s most influential urban centres. The city’s origins trace back to 1899 during the construction of the Uganda Railway by the British colonial administration. It began as a railway camp and supply depot located on a flat, swampy area known to the Maasai as Enkare Nairobi, meaning “the place of cool waters.” This name later became the city’s official identity.

Details

Initially, Nairobi served as a convenient midpoint between Mombasa and Kisumu, offering an ideal location for railway workshops and storage. However, due to its strategic position and pleasant climate, it quickly grew into a trading and administrative hub. In 1905, the British decided to move the colonial capital from Mombasa to Nairobi, marking the beginning of its rapid urbanization. European settlers established farms in the surrounding highlands, and the city became a commercial centre connecting the interior with the coast.
